The City of Bath is probably the most elegant city in Britain and as you alight from the luxury of your chauffer driven car it’s easy to imagine this fine Regency city as it was in the 18th and 19th centuries. But Bath’s history goes back much further than a mere three hundred years. The ancient Celts discovered the beneficial properties of the warm springs and following them the Romans who built the temple and baths which today have been restored to their former glory. A visit to the Romans Bath is a must for today’s visitors and you can still take the waters in the fashionable Pump Room.
One famous visitor was Jane Austen who made her home in the city between 1801 and 1806. This close association resulted in her novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion being mainly set in Bath. A Georgian house in Gay Street houses the Jane Austen Centre and provides an insight into Bath in her time and the influence it had on her.
There are a number of other important museums and exhibitions conveniently located in the centre of the city. The cellars of Bath Abbey house the Heritage Vaults museum with many objects from the past and an audio-visual presentation to tell the story of the Abbey.
The elegant Assembly Rooms on Bennett Street are the home to the Museum of Costume which looks at fashion from around 1600 to the present day with the Holborne Museum housing the collection of Sir William Holborne including work by Turner, Stubbs and Gainsborough. The magnificent Royal Crescent is the last word in elegant Georgian design and the first house, 1 Royal Crescent, is now a World Heritage Building. On a smaller scale the great astronomer, William Herschel’s house in New King’s Street is a gem. The original kitchen, music room and his workshops where he made his telescopes are there to see along with a perfect Georgian Garden.
