If it’s a fine day, and even if it isn’t wrap up well and take one of the many waterborne trips around the heart of the city, the Harbour. It’s the best way to get an idea of what a bustling and lively place Bristol is. Waterborne transport has become one of the city’s many attractions and it underlines the history of the place as a major port.
The wines of Spain, Portugal and France came through these docks along with the spices of the Indies both west and east. Like Liverpool in the north, much of the wealth of 17th and 18th centuries came from the slave trade but with the Act of Abolition more socially acceptable cargoes found their way to the holds and decks of the merchants ships.
The dockyard museum is home to a fascinating exhibition and of course the SS Great Britain which, when it was launched by Prince Albert in 1843, was the world largest ocean liner. At the time it was designed, by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was the worlds first large iron clad ship and the first to be propelled by a screw propeller. Restored at a cost of £35m it has been transformed from a rotting, rusting hulk to what the visitor sees today.
Brunel was also responsible for designing the Clifton Suspension bridge which spans the River Avon. It was completed after his death in 1859 and has become a memorial to this amazing designer and engineer.
Along with a wealth of pubs, clubs and fine restaurants the spiritual and intellectual needs of residents and visitors are catered for by the Cathedral and many churches including St Georges where the BBC broadcast concerts on a regular basis. There is also the Bristol Old Vic Theatre and the many cultural and musical events taking place in various venues around the city.
