A 60 mile journey north of London in your chauffeur driven luxury car will find you in the University City of Cambridge. Scholars first came here in 1200AD but the foundation stone for King’s College was laid by Henry VI in1441. In those days its students came from Eton College near Windsor, also under the patronage of the King. Despite Henry’s wish for it to reflect his power, only the Chapel was completed and it was not until 1724 that the Gibbs building was begun. In 1828 William Wilkins added the Gate House and screen, the Dining Hall, Library and Old Lodge.
During the sixteenth century the college land which adjoins the buildings began to be planted with trees and by the 17th century College gardens were created. Over the years this area has become known as the Backs and still fulfils its original purpose as an area to relax in.
The city is a lively and bustling place especially during the University term and the colleges and churches provide both a background and setting for many cultural activities. Great St Mary’s is the University Church. The original building, destroyed by fire in 1290, was gradually rebuilt with help from the College who, until the building of the Senate House, used it for its many ceremonies.
It has been said that the Fitzwilliam Museum, housed in the Founders Building and opened in 1848, is the finest small museum in Europe. It has wonderful collection of paintings and porcelain and a unique collection of autographed manuscripts by Handel, Purcell and others
Close by the city is the American Military Cemetery. Established in 1943 on land donated by the University its presence reflects the large number of US casualties from bases in the area. It is a moving reminder of the terrible losses suffered in WW2.
