Looking
towards the South Downs over the Weald of Kent, Chartwell was the family
home of Winston Churchill, his wife Clementine and their five children.
It was bought by them in 1924 and remained the family home until his death
in 1965. Given to the National Trust in 1946 it has been kept very much
as it was in the pre-war years containing portraits of Churchill himself,
personal mementoes of his life and of course many examples of his own
paintings. The Visitor Book is perhaps one of the most important objects as it clearly shows how Chartwell was the hub of political thought and action in those pre war years. The great and the good are all there and one can imagine the long discussions over brandy and cigars long into the night. To Churchill, Chartwell was a haven of calm tranquillity. He could recharge his batteries here amongst the gardens, the lakes and rivers. His practical nature could find expression in remodelling the gardens, building walls, putting his own and Clementine’s stamp on the place. Lady Churchill’s request was that visitors would feel that the house and gardens were still occupied and on a summer’s day there certainly is that feeling of intimacy. The Trust is in the process of restoring the Kitchen Garden to what it was before the war and today it already supplies the Restaurant with produce when available. The Golden Rose Avenue which runs down the centre of the garden was set out and planted by the couple’s children to celebrate their parent’s golden wedding in 1958. In keeping with reflecting the original planting many of the borders and areas are being replanted with pastel colours and plants that attract butterflies. In the Garden Studio some 150 of Sir Winston’s painting can be seen and there are often talks on the subject. |
