Along
with its twin sisters, Hereford and Worcester, Gloucester is the third
and most important of the Cotswold cities. As Britain’s most inland
port it was a prosperous city handling the produce from the surrounding
countryside and transporting goods from Birmingham and other centres of
manufacturing in the Midlands and North to the port of Bristol and beyond.. Today that trade has gone but the old warehouses now are the home of shops, museums, restaurants and pavement cafes. It has become a centre of all types of antiques and is a mecca for collectors with some 65 shops catering for every possible collector’s speciality. Looking over all the activities of the present day city as it has for the past 1300 years, stands the Cathedral. With its medieval stained glass and beautiful fan vaulted cloisters it is yet another example of the superb architecture in the region. The Chapter House and the tombs of Edward II and Robert Duke of Normandy and Monk’s Lavatorium are just some of the features worth looking out for. Harry Potter fans may well recognise them from scenes in the Harry Potter movies which were filmed there. Speaking of Potters, next door to the cathedral is the actual shop that inspired Beatrix Potter’s tale, The Tailor of Gloucester. The City Museum and Art gallery has exhibits and special displays of ceramics and paintings from the county. Two other museums worth looking out for are the Gloucester Folk Museum and the National Waterways Museum. The Folk museum, housed in Tudor building on Westgate Street, has displays of the social history of the area and examples of the crafts, trade and industries from the 16th century to the present day. The award winning National Waterways Museum is located in a Victorian warehouse and tells the story of work on the rivers and canals which were used to transport goods and materials to all parts of the country. |
