Hereford and Worcester, together with Gloucester, are the three great cathedral cities of England. For the last three hundred years they have been brought together every year by the Three Choirs Festival which is host to many world famous artistes and composers in addition to the choirs of the three cathedrals.
Hereford Cathedral standing on the banks of the River Wye dates back to 1079 and is the home of the famous 13th century Mappa Mundi and the Chained Library with books dating back to the 8th century.
On less spiritual matters, with Hereford being one of the centres of cider making, the King Offa Distillery offers exhibitions, demonstrations and free cider tasting. When he visited Hereford in 1729 Daniel Defoe developed a taste for cider which he found ‘so cheap and fine that we never found fault with the exchange’ . No less true today, a cool glass of cider after walking round the narrow streets and courtyards of the town is just as welcome.
A few miles north, Worcester, with its magnificent 11th century cathedral, is a more commercial and in earlier days, industrial city than Hereford. The riverside, though once a commercial area is now providing a pleasant lifestyle background for visitor and local alike.
The Royal Worcester Porcelain factory and museum offers guided tours and the opportunity to buy best ware, seconds and clearance items at bargain prices. The Commandery, is a wonderful timber framed building decorated and furnished in Tudor and Stuart styles along with displays depicting the background to the Civil War. Lower Broadheath to the west of the city is the birthplace of Sir Edward Elgar one of England’s greatest composers. Between both cities are the Malvern Hills, an inspiration to Elgar who used to roam their gentle slopes seeking inspiration for his music. Malvern spa has the clearest and sweetest water you will taste in all of England. While you’re there call into the Morgan Car Company and toy with the idea of ordering a new car!
