Arriving at Leeds Castle in your chauffeur driven luxury car you will immediately see why it has been called one of the loveliest castles in the world. As you wind your way through the Duckery with its ducks, geese and other waterfowl you will immediately be struck by the tranquillity of the place. Standing under a magnificent cedar at the exit to this area the castle and its moat begin to appear in front of you. A little further on along the banks of the River Len and the Castle stands full-square before you. The ruins of the Barbican and Fortified Mill lead you on to the medieval gate tower through which you pass to cross the cobbled causeway to the impressive façade of the Castle itself.
Inside the Castle the Queen’s Room and the Henry VIII Banqueting Hall with its ebony floor give some idea of its medieval past while the 1920s are conjured up in the rooms of Lady Olive Baillie the last of the castles private owners.
Walk through the archway in the Courtyard to the Culpeper Garden which is a perfect example of an English Cottage Garden and is a mass of colour between May and October. A little further on is the aviary with its collection of exotic birds, some of which may answer if you speak with them! Further on still is the maze with an underground grotto at its centre and then the welcome sight of Wykeham Martin Tea Rooms for a brief rest before taking the path down to the Great Water and the Lady Baillie Garden with its terraces of Mediterranean plants.
Turning back towards the Castle, the Land Train is a restful and scenic way of making the return journey and if you wish the Courtyard Shop and Plant Centre are ideal places to pick up a gift or souvenir of the day.
