The place to see the ‘Dreaming Spires of Oxford’ is the Carfax Tower in the city centre. Your luxury chauffeur driven car can drop you off there and though there is a climb of 99 steps, the view from the top is well worthwhile. Take a look at the tower clock and see the ‘Quarter Boys’ strike the bells to signal the quarter hours.
The four main streets of the city radiate from the tower. Cornhill and Queen Street to the north and west are the main shopping streets. Look out for the Covered Market. The city centre is also the location for Christ Church, Trinity and Balliol just three of the 36 Colleges.
Also in the area are other buildings of interest. The Playhouse Theatre, The Randolph Hotel and St Giles but it is The Ashmolean Museum which must take pride of place. It started life as a private collection in 1683 and became open to the public a few years later. It is one the great repositories of knowledge with a massive collection of artefacts which are still being added to. The world famous Bodleian library is the main focus of research for university students and scholars from around the world who come to further their research.
Christ Church Cathedral which is itself the College Chapel as well as being the centre of the Diocese is a simply beautiful building and the latest in a line on the site going back to the 8th century. Cardinal Wolsey started building the here and had plans to build a larger chapel on the site but, with his fall from grace this building was saved from demolition.
The architect of St Paul’s, Sir Christopher Wren, designed the Sheldonian Theatre in 1664 which has been described as one of the city’s architectural jewels. It was designed as a venue for the main meetings and ceremonies of the University and still fulfils that function today. Subject to use it is open to those interested in the building.
