As your chauffeur driven luxury car glides across the narrow bridge that spans the river there is little immediate evidence of the ancient buildings that are some of the links we have to the world’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare. Even the theatre complex along the river to the left gives only the merest hint of what awaits the visitor to Stratford-upon-Avon.
Shakespeare’s birth place in Henley Street with its Visitor’s Centre and gardens and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, a mile out of town to the west, are the two most recognisable buildings but seek out Halls Croft, his daughter’s house in the Old Town area. Then, move on to Holy Trinity church where Shakespeare was baptised in 1564 and subsequently buried in 1616. He retired to Nash’s House, New Place in 1610.
His mother Mary Arden’s house at Wilmcote village 3 miles north-west of Stratford is also well worth a visit. By the way, all these timber frame houses would not have appeared like this in Shakespeare’s day. The Victorians exposed the timber frames by removing the plaster which covered the surface of the building. Finally there is the Memorial Theatre, which lies alongside the river Avon with its swans and ducks, rowing boats and river trips. Home of the world famous Royal Shakespeare Company, the original theatre was completed in 1879 but suffered badly from fire in 1926. The present theatre opened in 1932 and was renamed The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 1961. Even if you do not have time to attend a performance there are backstage tours most days. In addition to all this culture there are good bars and restaurants in the town and on a fine day it’s worth spending a little time just watching the world go sitting by the river or in the riverside bar of the Theatre.
