The
town of Warwick was founded in 914. Its position controlled the river
crossings to London and the roads to Coventry and the important salt deposits
at Droitwich. A couple of hours from London by luxury chauffeur driven
car and a few miles from Stratford upon Avon, it is dominated by Warwick
Castle which was founded in 1068 by William the Conqueror. Today it combines
the ruins of a 14th century castle with one of the finest houses in England.
The work in the 14th century under the of Earl Beauchamp and included
the Great Hall, the Water Gate to the River Avon and a high curtain wall
on the west front joining the Gate House to the Guy Tower. Beauchamp also built the Lord Leycester Hospital to house the Guilds of St George and the Blessed Virgin providing accommodation for priests and Guild members. In 1571 The Earl of Leycester acquired the building and set up a hospital for 12 ex and disabled soldiers and though changed in its administration the Hospital still provides accommodation for 8 ex-servicemen and their wives. Following a disastrous fire in 1694 many building were rebuilt. The great church of St Mary’s gained a new nave and tower at this time. Founded in 1123 part of the Norman building is still visible in the crypt. Thomas Beauchamp rebuilt the Chancel Vestries and Chapter House in the 14th century. The Beauchamp Chapel built in the 15th century to house the remains of his successor Richard is acknowledged as a prime example of church architecture throughout Europe. In addition to these historically important places and the town itself, there is the Warwickshire Museum which has displays of local archaeology, details of the Great Fire and Sheldon’s Tapestry Map which dates back some 500 years. The St John’s Museum displays period reconstructions of Victorian domestic scenes and is home to the Royal Warwickshire Regimental Museum. Finally the Warwickshire Yeomanry Museum has an interesting collection of uniforms, firearms, swords, sabres and selected silverware. |
