Quite
simply, Windsor is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world.
It is an official residence and has been a royal home for over 900 years.
William the Conqueror chose the site, standing as it does high above the
Thames guarding the western approaches to the capital and just a day’s
march from the Tower of London. The basic structure is as it was in William’s
day. Henry II rebuilt the Round Tower in stone in the 12th century and
St George’s Chapel started by Edward IV was completed by Henry VIII. Various monarchs added to the building over the centuries but it was Charles II who decided to make the castle a showpiece of design and elegance creating new State Apartments with beautiful murals a ceiling painted by Verrio and carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Charles also laid out the Long Walk which leads to Windsor Great Park. Around 1820, George IV started a programme of alterations, adding turrets and towers in the gothic style. Internally, the private apartments were moved and he added the Waterloo Chamber which was designed to display portraits of those rulers, statesmen and soldiers responsible for the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. Despite two world wars, the great fire of 1992 dominates the recent history of the castle. Taking over 15 hours to subdue, the fire destroyed nine principle rooms and affected over 100 others,. After five years of intensive work the restoration was completed six months ahead of schedule at a cost of £37m. Apart from the State Apartments and St Georges Chapel there are many other attractions including Queen Mary’s Dolls House and a drive through the Great Park in a chauffeur driven luxury car is a great experiences in itself! Like Buckingham Palace the Royal Standard flies and the Changing of the Guard takes place in the quadrangle when the Queen is in residence. |
